Privacy
In this post, discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media.
With the idea of new media, the idea of openness and freedom comes with it. With new media, internet media can now be posted, edited, and shared countless of times, in real time. Privacy and confidentiality is something that new media struggles to promote. The thought is that if something can be shared with one person, it can be shared with all people. This is why if anything is posted onto the internet, it will never be erased from the internet. There is always a history or someone watching at all times, this is why anything shared on the internet cannot be considered confidential.
The only way to keep something confidential is to use advanced levels of encryption (in the case of file sharing). With encryption, only the person with the key can open the protected file, promoting a level of confidentiality. Even then, hackers have long been around to crack encrypted programs and open them and share them with everyone on the internet (for example, Torrents). New media has promoted the use of torrents, which is peer 2 peer file sharing around the world. Once one person uploads a program onto the internet, anyone with the right methods can create a copy for themselves.

Hey Eric- I totally agree. Once we post something and remove or delete it, it's always stored somewhere in the system. It's definitely something that's good and bad, but also something I think people need to constantly keep in mind, especially because sometimes I see people post weird things on social media and I wonder if they're even concerned about their privacy or not.
