Blog V Wiki

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?

Blogs and Wikis are both generally considered one of the greatest inventions to come from Web 2.0. With this new idea of the internet, people have access to both create and edit web pages in real time, and also enter and share new information as it becomes available regardless of where they are in the world. This is where blogs and wikis come in. Although similar, there are a few large differences between them.

Generally, blogs are maintained by a single entity or person. This is because a blog is something that can be personalized to fit ones needs, and anyone can make one and fill in any information they want. Sometimes blogs are used "just for fun" while wikis take a little more effort to maintain. This is because a wiki on the other hand is something that typically has many people entering information into it at a time, with the information being the primary concern of its users - not the personalization.

Blogs can be used for collaboration via its comments section, similar to the way a forum works. A blog can also be divided up into different tabs and sections which can have different types of entries, similar to a wiki. A wiki can often site information from a blog as a primary resource depending on the situation.

Blogs are usually not as heavily scrutinized as wikis are. Because wikis are generally supposed to be trusted sources of information, there is a large amount of fact checking that many blogs do not have.
