Twitter compared to Blackboard/Class Discussion
I think that twitter is similar to a blackboard discussion, in that it is a asynchronous discussion platform where people can post and reply to each other, and reply whenever they are available. While twitter is more equipped for quicker thoughts (200 or so characters now), blackboard allows for more room for replies and discussion topics.
Twitter is more similar to class discussions because class discussions tend to be quick (because classes have an allotted time) and a lot of people would not have enough time to get everything off their chest, so they have to choose their words wisely in order to contribute to the discussion. If you liked the discussion you had, you could befriend the person and talk to them more later, like you could if you chose to follow someone on twitter.

I find it really difficult to have conversations on twitter, I don't know who's responding, who sees it, or who else can see it!
