Social networking sites
All very different social networking platforms. Facebook is now dubbing itself as a technology platform because they are moving away from the model of social networking but moving towards the model of news sharing and information selling. Twitter is the primary platform for trivial sharing and also the home of journalists and quick breaking news sharing. I personally believe that Facebook is such an established platform with enough money to do as it pleases. It shouldn't push for innovation but it has the resources to do so, as it has become a primary news and propoganda sharing site, targeting users with various stories based on their interests. Twitter is catering to curating their feeds based on who the user follows, and only selling ad spots (showing up on everyones feeds for a fee).
LinkedIn, a professional social networking site, is very different than the others. The primary use for this site is to find jobs and connect with other young professionals in the same businesses, and also see what opportunities are available. While you might be able to do this on Facebook (to a lesser extent), LinkedIn is more of a no-nonsense "get in and get out" type of social network, with professionalism being key.
Instagram, the world easiest to use social networking site, is simply photographs, keeping texts to a minimum, and has its user follow its friends, or popular pages as they see fit. News and networking is not a primary feature on this site, as this is more of a casual use site, with some people who manage to make a living (if they are lucky enough to "go viral") by selling their high follower count page spaces to advertisers to make money per post advertising a product such as fit tea or teeth whitening service.

The scariest part to me about social networking and social networking sites is how well they've also been adopted into ponzi scheme esque organizations; they call it network marketing now, and definitely make advantage of people's personal social networks.
